🚨 Real-Life Scenario: The ATM Trap

Imagine this: You walk up to an ATM, insert your card, enter your PIN, and request to withdraw ₹5,000. The machine whirs like normal, shows “Transaction Successful” on the screen — but no cash comes out. You wait. Nothing.

Eventually, you leave thinking it's a technical glitch. But minutes later, someone walks up, peels off a hidden tape from the cash dispenser, and collects the money meant for you.

This is not fiction — it's a real fraud technique used by criminals in India. Gangs place thin adhesive strips or transparent tapes at the cash dispensing slot, preventing the cash from falling out until the victim walks away.

🔍 How Does This Scam Work?

  • A fraudster places tape or obstruction on the cash outlet.
  • When you attempt to withdraw cash, the ATM shows a successful transaction, but no cash is released.
  • Thinking it’s a technical issue, the victim leaves the ATM.
  • The scammer returns, removes the tape, and collects the trapped cash.

These frauds are swift, silent, and often go unnoticed until it’s too late. But you still have rights — and steps you can take to recover your money.

📌 Step-by-Step: What To Do Immediately

1. Don’t Panic — Stay Calm

Take a breath and stay at the ATM. Fraudsters rely on panic and confusion to work
their trick.

2. Check the Transaction Slip or Message

  • If the machine provides a receipt, check the transaction status.
  • If your phone is linked to your bank, check for SMS or app notification that confirms a debit.

3. Inspect the ATM Slot

  • Look closely at the cash outlet.
  • If you see a tape or something suspicious stuck in the slot, do not remove it yourself — this could tamper with evidence.

4. Note Down Key Details

Write down:
  • ATM location and ID (usually printed on the machine).
  • Date and exact time of the incident.
  • Any visible CCTV camera (in case footage is needed).

✅ 5. Take Photos (If Safe)

If the ATM appears tampered with, take clear pictures of the machine and the cash slot (without touching anything).

🏦 Step 2: File a Complaint with Your Bank

🖊️ File an ATM Dispute

  • Visit your bank branch or call customer care immediately.
  • Lodge an official complaint for “ATM transaction failed but account debited.”
  • Get an acknowledgment or complaint number in writing or over email.

⏱️ Bank's Time Limit to Respond:

As per RBI guidelines, the bank is required to reverse such a transaction within 5 calendar days, provided the issue is reported promptly.
RBI Rule: If the bank delays compensation beyond 5 days, you’re entitled to ₹100 per day as penalty until the money is returned.

👮‍♂️ Step 3: Report to the Police

Yes, you can and should file a police complaint. Here’s how:

📝 How to Lodge a Police Complaint

  • Go to the nearest police station where the ATM is located.
  • File an FIR (First Information Report) for fraud or theft.
  • Describe the incident in detail. Share photos, SMS alerts, and transaction slips as evidence.
  • Mention any suspicious individuals you saw around the ATM.

👮 What To Expect from the Police

  • The police should record your complaint and issue an FIR or Non-Cognizable Report (NCR).
  • They may request CCTV footage from the ATM provider.
  • They may coordinate with the bank to prevent further frauds.
⚠️ If the police refuse to file your complaint, you have the right to: Ask for written refusal with reasons. Approach the District Superintendent of Police. File an online complaint via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: https://cybercrime.gov.in

🧠 Know Your Rights as a Consumer

Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and Banking Ombudsman Scheme, you have the right to:
  • Safe access to financial services
  • Redressal for failed transactions
  • Compensation for mental agony/loss caused by negligence

If your bank fails to resolve the matter:

🔁 Escalate Further:

  1. Write to the Banking Ombudsman (specific to your region).
  2. File a complaint via https://cms.rbi.org.in
  3. Approach the District Consumer Forum if necessary.

🙌 Practical Safety Tips for Using ATMs

🔒 Always shield your PIN while typing
🧐 Inspect the cash slot before transactions
📹 Prefer ATMs inside bank branches with cameras
🤳 Register for mobile alerts for real-time updates
🚫 Avoid help from strangers at ATM kiosks

📞 Helplines for Immediate Help

  • Bank’s 24x7 Customer Care (find it on your debit card)
  • Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930 (National Toll-Free)
  • Cyber Crime Portal: https://cybercrime.gov.in

🧾 Real Case Reference

In 2023, a gang in Maharashtra was arrested for using double tape tricks on multiple ATMs across the state. Victims reported missing cash only to realize days later that someone had retrieved their money. Due diligence and immediate action led to recovery in some cases.

✅ Summary: What Should You Do?

Situation

Action

Money debited, no cash
Contact bank, file ATM dispute
Suspect fraud
Visit nearest police station
ATM slot blocked
Take pictures, report to both bank & police
Bank delays refund
Approach RBI Ombudsman or Consumer Forum

🔚 Conclusion

ATM frauds are on the rise, but you don’t have to be helpless. Knowing your rights, acting promptly, and staying informed are your best defenses.
Always remember: Your money is your right. Don’t let negligence — yours or the bank’s — cost you peace of mind.
